TEAM

Departments: GIS & Remote Sensing
NARENA
NARENA’s main activities take place in the inventory and assessment of natural resources and monitoring environmental impacts of economic utilization of these resources. In doing so, it makes use of modern technologies such as GIS and Remote Sensing. NARENA has created and maintains the country’s most extensive geo-database, which is regularly updated and enlarged.

NARENA’s services concentrate in the fields of analyses and mapping of vegetation – soil type relationships, planning of access road, skid trails, annual coupes, tree location mapping, etc. within timber concessions, setting up of GIS units including training and supply of digitized geo-data, compiling topographic and thematic maps for the general public, etc.

These services are provided to both Governmental agencies; mostly the Min. of Natural Resources and commercial companies such as Staatsolie Oil Company, SURALCO, BHP Billiton, Bruynzeel and other logging and mining companies. But also NGO’s; especially conservation NGO’s such as WWF, ACT and CI, and CBO’s make regular use of the services of NARENA.

The department has collected data on:

  • Topography of Suriname (based on 100.000 map sheet, Central Bureau for Aerial Survey)
  • Vegetation of Suriname (based on reconnaissance vegetation maps and satellite data)
  • Protected areas of Suriname (based on data of theForest Service Suriname)

To name a few, a random selection of recent and running projects in which NARENA is
involved can be given as follows:

  • Validation of Criteria and Indicators for Sustainable Forest Management, FAO;
  • Creation of topographic and thematic maps for a new geography book for the
    primary school (Min. of Education);
  • Mapping of gold mining zones in the Greenstone belt for the WWF gold mining
    abatement project;
  • Setting up of a GIS Unit, including training and supply of digitized geo-data, within the Department of Geology and Mining (Min. of Natural Resources);
  • Vegetation and soil type/geological assessment and mapping of the Rac a Rac and Klaverblad area for bauxite mining companies;
  • Land use and vegetation assessment in the Bigi Pan MUMA;
  • Locating and mapping of on shore oil exploration sites for Staatsolie Oil Company.
