The Center for Agricultural Research in Suriname, CELOS, was established in 1967 as a branch of the agricultural college of Wageningen, the Netherlands in 1967. With the independence of Suriname in 1975 the foundation was formally placed under the umbrella of the Anton de Kom University of Suriname, followed by the formalization of the statutes in 1967.
As far as research is concerned, the Agricultural Production department studies cultivation techniques with minimal harmful impact to the environment in the cultivation of root crops, cereals and legumes, with benefits for various agricultural regions.
Forest Management
The Forest Management department mainly conducts applied research on systems, methods and techniques for the management, protection and sustainable use of forest and other (semi) natural areas and for the utilization of products and services originating from these areas.
NARENA
NARENA stands for Natural Resources and Environmental Assessment. The department was initiated on the basis of a unique project in which one of the objectives was to collect data and divide Suriname into eco-regions.
